Case Study:
HMRC Hub
Project Overview
In October 2022, the new Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) regional hub officially opened, marking a significant milestone in modern government infrastructure. Designed to improve operational efficiency and safety, the facility required expert fire protection systems to ensure full compliance with UK Building Regulations.
Northern Sealants was engaged to deliver passive fire protection throughout the building, contributing to its long-term safety, structural integrity, and regulatory approval.
Our Role
Northern Sealants was selected to design and install passive fire protection systems throughout the HMRC hub. We applied high-performance fire stopping materials across fire-rated walls and floors, sealing around all mechanical and electrical penetrations including pipes, ducts, and cable trays. Our installations were completed in line with BS 476 and EN 1366 standards, ensuring full regulatory compliance.
As a trusted partner for large-scale developments, we provided clear documentation, photographed installations, and supported the fire strategy from design through to handover.
Key Measures
- Compartmentation Integrity: Fire collars, wraps, intumescent sealants, and mortars were installed to preserve compartmentation and prevent fire and smoke spread.
- Coordination with Trades: Seamless collaboration with M&E contractors ensured that fire stopping works aligned with wider programme activities.
- Compliance Documentation: Every installation was recorded, labelled, and documented with full photographic evidence to support fire strategy handover.Every installation was recorded and labelled on-site. Final reports were delivered with location tagging, product specification, and photographic evidence.
Project Outcome
Northern Sealants delivered a complete passive fire protection package, ensuring the new HMRC hub met all safety requirements. Our work contributed to a successful handover and long-term fire resilience for the facility. The building now benefits from robust, invisible protection — safeguarding both staff and operations within the site.
